HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The city was founded on October 12th, 1929 by the Provincial Government, so as to support the colonists and the Aysen Factory Society, which had its headquarters since the year 1906. The city is located in the valley formed by Simpson and Coyhaique rivers.

Coyhaique, in aborigine language, means village between rivers. The Municipality is created in the year 1948, whereas in 1974 Coyhaique is named as the Capital of the 11th Region. The scheme of the city is quite particular. For example, its square has got 10 exits. The Region was inhibited by indigenes groups such as Chonos and Alacalufes, who lived from hunting and fishing. At the end of the XIX century, a little colonization process started, due to the wooden wealth, many companies appeared. On the other hand, the weather conditions allowed the raising of bovines and ovine.

There is a monument called Ovejero, that was created in order to honor the cattle risers of those years.
